Concept
The school environment is often times dubbed as the second home, as students would spend most of their time holed up in the school after their respective homes. Knowing this, it is important to create an environment that is comfortable and welcoming. When we put the thought of NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts) into mind, it’s exterior does not clearly reflect its identity as an art school. This indifferent exterior compared to the other buildings around dulled the school environment, to both the outsider and as a student.
Following the train of thought of Dan Flavin, that light is able to sculpt the environment, and Eliason’s “The Weather Project”, an installation of a light source constructed out of LED lights would liven up the school and create a more contemporary environment. A more “fun” take on the weather would be to reverse the apparent light source during both day and night. By putting up the light with respect to its surroundings, we bring the audience’s attention towards a previously unnoticed school architecture. Similar to its definition, our light brings visibility for the school environment. The presence of a light installation bring positivity and mental betterment, especially during assessment period where many are stressed, and cooped indoors.
During the day, our lights will be a white blue light, representing the moon
During the night/evening, our lights would be white warm yellow, representing the Sun.
We are making a contrast between the timing of the day with the colours of the lights.
